Project Overview

This custom home in Como responds to a compact urban block where careful planning was required to improve solar access, privacy and internal living quality.

The key design move was to position the primary living areas on the upper level.

This allowed the home to better access northern natural light while also taking advantage of elevated views.

By moving the main living spaces away from the constraints often found at ground level, the design creates a more open, flexible and light-filled living environment.

Key Design Considerations

Design Approach

The design centres on locating the main living spaces upstairs, where light, outlook and privacy could be better resolved.

This approach helps the home avoid some of the limitations created by ground-level garaging, site access and neighbouring built form.

The upper floor is arranged to create a strong connection between the living spaces, terrace areas, outlook and natural light.

Rather than accepting the limitations of the site, the planning uses section, orientation and spatial arrangement to create a stronger architectural outcome.

A Considered Response to Orientation

This project demonstrates how a compact urban site can be improved through early design strategy.

The location of living areas, openings, terraces and circulation all influence how the home feels and performs.

By reworking the planning arrangement around light, outlook and privacy, the design turns a difficult orientation into a more considered and liveable custom home.
